MOTIFS - FINNISH PHOTOGRAPHIC ART
7.10. – 18.11.2007
Copper Smithy, Fiskars

The theme of the exhibition is nature, the relationship of the individual to society or the environment. In deciding what to include, or exclude, in the show, I concentrated on the meaning of motif. At first sight it would appear that the participants are artists whose works can, traditionally speaking, be considered narrative and figurative − or is it really that simple?

In choosing the motif, the artist defines and limits the visible or invisible by which he tries to influence the viewer. This could concern the artist’s political, religious, private, social or aesthetic attitude, which is transformed into the work or act. It’s a question of sharing a personal view with the public.

A photograph is the imprint light creates of an object, a record of a specific moment or event. What is depicted can never return and remains simply the figurative origin of the portrayed image. An image consists of several layers – narrative, light, colour, size, form, composition, etc. Each of these may function as the ”motif”. For this reason there can be several motifs that overlap or intermingle with each other. The task of the viewer is to create from all this a personal order and interpret the totality indicated by the image.
