Exhibition concept
In summer 2007, The Artisans, Designers and Artists of Fiskars Cooperative will arrange an exhibition on the theme “Transparency”. The theme will be interpreted at both concrete and abstract levels through the means of art, design and craftsmanship.
Transparency is a topical phenomenon of our age. It is widely used in social discourse to denote openness and honesty. The concept also has a powerful visual impact on our environment. Transparency has created a new aesthetic norm: it reveals both abstract and tangible structures and puts what was secret into the public domain.
Transparency is a consequence of the splintered nature of the modern world, where constant change has made chaos an ever-present aspect of everyday life. Transparency tends to highlight pluralism, most visibly in the media. The media reality, the simultaneous presence of truth and illusion, has obscured the nature of what is actually real. Mercifully, this has coincided with an increased public awareness of the structures of democracy and the impact of the media.
This phenomenon is evident in art, architecture and design as a proliferation of different new materials: some of the new favourites are gauzy metal webbing and plastics, glass and wooden trellises and grids, and various reflective materials. Their aesthetic effect relies on their capacity for filtering light and a “metabolic” effect that influences perception, breathing, heat, humidity, touch, sound and other similar aspects. Elements where surface and structure are the same component have become far more widespread in both architecture and design. In art, this same phenomenon is manifest as a distancing of the surface texture.
In an almost self-referential sense, transparency is a highly complex subject: works created from plastic, film, gauze and ice bring a natural, tactile presence to the exhibition.
